HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES-92-5512 (RECYCLING/WEST BASIN WATER)i � 2 3 4 dr' 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 � 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 1 RESOLUTION NO. 92-5512 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HERMOSA BEACH, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF THE WEST BASIN WATER RECYCLING PROJECT. WHEREAS, 80% of the water provided by the West Basin Municipal Water District comes from outside the region -- North- ern California, the Colorado River and the Owens Valley -- all dwindling and unreliable sources; and WHEREAS, we need a local supply of water to provide drought protection to the 827,000 residents in the 18 cities and unincor- porated areas of the Los Angeles County which comprise the West Basin; and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will purify 70,000 acre feet of waste water (nearly 23 billion gallons) of water per year which will be used to irrigate cemeteries, land- scaping along highway medians, golf courses, school grounds land- scaping, public parks and industrial purposes; and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will reduce the amount of sewage effluent dumped into the Santa Monica Bay by 23 billion gallons a year -- and the project is supported by the Sierra Club and The Mono Lake Committee; and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will treat, chlorinate and purify reclaimed water to meet strict local and statewide water quality control board and health department stan- dards, and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will help us diversify our water sources and drought -proof our area; and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will reduce our dependence on increasingly unreliable outside water sources 1 2 `e■r✓ 3 4 V..' 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 -14 Nftwo� 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 and protect us against cost increases and cutbacks imposed by these outside sources; and WHEREAS, recycled water is the most cost-effective addition- al water source available; and WHEREAS, the West Basin Water Recycling Project will save taxpayers money because the recycled water will be used by public agencies, such as schools and parks, for their landscape irriga- tion needs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the; City of Hermosa Beach supports the West Basin Water Recycling Project.
