Kent Allen, Chairman Ken Robertson, Secretary Date 68 Pier Ave. | Hermosa Beach, Ca. 90254 | (310) 376-4412 November 17, 2014 Attn: Chairman Kent Allen Members of the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission Dear Kent and Members, American Junkie is proud to be a member of the Hermosa Beach community. Our restaurant is inspired by national pride and named after the country in which it resides. Similar to such businesses as Surf Junkie, Yoga Junkie, Cake Junkie, Freedom Junkie, Caffeine Junkie, Burger Junkie and Dance Junkie, the word junkie denotes an enthusiastic loyalty and in our case, our loyalty is to the United States. The American Junkie name implies a sense of patriotism. This patriotism is seen in our decor, food and staff. American Junkie remains true to its name by supporting its nation as follows – • Utilizing and serving 95% of products made here in the USA with focus on the health and wellbeing of its customers, employees and planet. • Seeking out vendors that promote American made products. • Creating furniture and artwork using reclaimed items from US history. • Showcasing the American flag. • Supporting local and national charities to help out the less fortunate. Charity American Junkie is passionate about being involved in the surrounding community and regularly sponsors local charities throughout the South bay. We recognize that we can make an impact on our community while spreading the word to our customers about the importance of charitable giving. Customers and employees are encouraged to join our effort. American Junkie supports national charities, but pays particular attention to those close to home in Hermosa Beach. We aim to have a charity event every month highlighting a specific organization to raise awareness and help drive donations for their cause. Kevin Barry and I, local residents and partners of American Junkie, pay particular attention to being a part of the Hermosa Beach community. Kevin and I, as well as all of the management team at American Junkie, make a conscious effort to seek out charitable organizations that would benefit from the help of American Junkie. Here’s an example of just a few of the events and organizations we have hosted and contributed to – • Hermosa Beach Education Foundation – Nonprofit organization that creates awareness, commitment and financial support for continued educational development of the students and teachers of the Hermosa Beach City School District, thereby ensuring competence, competitiveness and creativity through community, corporate and private sector involvement. A glimpse at the charity events and donations scheduled in the near future – • In November, American Junkie will be hosting a community food drive with the LA Food Bank. • In December, American Junkie will again adopt families in need during the holiday season. Marketing Efforts Safety and Compliance Measures American Junkie knows that safety on the pier is a major concern with the city. We have taken the city’s recommendations on changes to our operations to further represent the community in the right light. In addition, we also enforce a strict dress code in our establishment including no hats or sports attire after 9 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. In an effort to work with the city and actively participate in the city's efforts to keep the pier a safe and fun environment, American Junkie Hermosa Beach is making conscious efforts to minimize noise on the pier. We have implemented new sound-reduction strategies, including the installation of a double-paned, noise reducing door. The door is closed during events with live entertainment. Security guards are stationed at every major entrance and exit ensuring that all doors are closed immediately after guests enter or exit. Our General Manager takes sound readings outside of our building every hour starting at 10:30pm with a decibel meter on weekend nights which is recorded in our manager reports. We have also addressed the issue of the lines outside of American Junkie, coming up with a solution to keep pier plaza clear of congestion. All of our security guards are required to take the state mandated courses to acquire a guard card (http://www.bsis.ca.gov/forms_pubs/guard_fact.shtml). These cards are a recognition of a security American Junkie has also risen to support the city’s daytime business on the pier. We are promoting 20% off lunch on the weekdays through social media and ads in the Easy Reader. We are also promoting a buy 1 lunch get 1 free offer through the Daily Breeze in an effort to help drive foot traffic on the pier during the day. We have hired a new executive chef to improve the menu. With a new menu and the city's free parking between 11am-2pm, we know American Junkie Hermosa Beach will be the popular place for lunch. With our kitchen being open and running latest on the pier all week, we are confident that our new menu will bring great success to our dinner business as well. (New garage door installed in October 2014 to eliminate noise, approx. $18,000 investment.) guard’s training to protect patrons, employees and community members. To obtain a guard card you must go through a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, complete 40 hours of training including 8 hours of "Power to Arrest" training and pass the exam. Training includes the following – • Signing the acknowledgment of American Junkie’s security plan and committing to abiding by our rules • Shadowing the Security Manager for one week. During that first week the Security Manager is radioed for any potential problems and the new guard observes how the situation is handled All of our security guards have a minimum of one year of experience, many with five years or more year of experience. Additionally, American Junkie requires that all its bartenders and servers take Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs (L.E.A.D.) and Responsible Beverage Service training as outlined by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. It is of paramount importance to American Junkie’s operations that staff have requisite tools to spot potentially intoxicated customers and know the pertinent Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) rules and regulations. All members of the American Junkie staff Pride themselves on being a good community member. Please know we are anxious to make sure that American Junkie promptly and effectively addresses all city council concerns and that together we insure the safety and well-being of the community and continue to offer a vibrant restaurant on the pier.
