Black, Fisher, Mi11er, Haneman, Viault and Chairman Dennie Absent: Mayor Edwards Also Present: Bud Tro~t, Acting Building In~pector PETITION OF BURLEY llANIE;t.S Petition of Burley Daniels, covering the J:-eB.r 125' of Lot .r.8, Block 78, Second Addition to Hermosa Beach. Petitioner requ,sets permission to use the lot f'or the storage of l.umber, waivlng the requirement of Ord.No.N.S.8 for an a~ stucco wall £1.urroundin,g the lot or parcel and substitu:t.ing a wood fence 8' high. The .r:rt.t,ached plot plan shows thi~ proposed fence to be built on the east bo1mda~y of this parcel only. Mr. Daniels ~as present, and he said th~t he hoped to lease thjs parcel to the Learned-Smith Lumber Compan), and he felt sure 1JJr~ Learned would be ~"illing to go along with Khat the neighboring pro-perty owners felt would be best £or the , re!:l.. Chairman Dennie informed him that ha was correct in that g; was the heighth cal.led for in the Ordinance, but he added th~t he felt Mr. Learned had intended to erect the fence on only one side of the parcel, as shownoon the accompanying plot. plan. He wished the Commission to realize this point. Tom Wallace~ representing the Learned-Smith Lumber Company felt that it was Mr. Lear-aed's intention to upt, the fence on the east bo~mdarv ~ betueen the existing motel and the propcsed storage lo·~. Adolph Ehlers regis·tered a protest aga:lnat the granting of 'this variance~ adding that no differences should be made betwaen pro-perty O'!fmers and conformity to ordinances .. Comm. Viault moved that this petition be denied on the grounds that, it would not be for the welfare 0£ the col1llll"mity to grant it, and because it does not conform to the terms of the existing zoning ordinance. Black, Fisher, Haneman, Miller, Viault and Chairman Dennie NO: None Absent: Mayor Edwards There was some discussion regarding the possible filing of b var~ru1cr covering property at 15JO Strand, aaking to be allowed to erect~ staircase in the 3' sideyard, to provide entrance and exit to a proposed second story unit. The Fire Chief was asked about the amount of room required for equipment and men to ba moved betveeu buildings, and he :felt the entira 3' should be alo~ted £or this purpose~ The consensus of the Commission seemed ~o be that they would not look ravorabiy upon the granting 0£ such a v~rianceb were it pre-sented!) Vl\l,LEY DRIY.E A letter from the City Council.9 enclosing an excenrt from the minutes of the Council meeting of January 17-t;hs 1956 was read by Chairman Dennieo The exce~pt called for2repr.esentatives from several civic bodies a~d City Commissions to be appointed to a Committee to be formed for the purpose of making a study and reeom.t1endation to the Council and School Board o:t Trustees as to the possibility of development of the proposed park rac11ities at the intersection of Gould Lane a.~d Valle} Drive~ Chairman Dennie inrormed the Commission at to the situation to da·ce and explained that one meeting of th~ w joint commi✓ct.ee;~ had already bean held, and that Commo Black ~-nd himself h,'¼d attended that meetingo Comm-Fisher moved that the action of Chairman Dennie in appointing two members to this joint committee be sustaineds and that they report to the Planning Commission on t.he progress of this Commit~-ee The motion was seconded by Comm. Viault and carried unanimously, PETITIOrl OF ;ll.,O, WILSON A communication dated January 16, :!.956 addressed to the City Council by th.e Building In&pector t-:as referred to ·the Planning Commission for their recommendat.ion; however, a further communi-cation dat.ed Janaary 20, 1956 and addre~:;,ed to the Planning Comm:iss:l.· , by the Building Inspector informed the Commission that Mr~ Wilson t1ished to withdraw b.is application :for a zone variance~ There was, therefore, nc, action necessary in this matter. ( TRI-CITY PLANNING CQMMI.'tTEE Pl,;.u"'lnl.nb Ccm.unis~.iion Februacy-lJb 1956 Page Th:ree Chairman Dennie informed the Commission that the next me~ting of thi:; organizatj.on is to be held in Hermosa Beach, Thursday, March 15, 1956, and ·that as the host City, he t-1ould like t,o see the entirf, Commission present at the meetingo Commo Black moved that the Planning Commission 0£ Hermosa Beach be authorized to be host to the Tri-City Planning Committee and that the Planning Commission be reimbursed by the City for necessary expenditures in connec•tion with this meeting. The motion was seconded by Comm., Via.ult and carried by the unanimous approval of the Commission. APPROVAL OF ~ Comma Black moved the approval of the minti.tes of the meetings of December 12, 1955 and January 9, 19560 The motion was seconded by Comm. Fisher and carried unanimouslyo PLANNING COMMISSION TO $ET TWICE MQNTHIJ Chairman Dennie suggested the necessity of having enight a month 1.1hich could be devo·ted to SJ\iudy, particularly or the proposed new zoning map and ordinance and other problems as they ariaea Commo Viault suggested that the 4th Monday of the month might be a suitable night, and the Commission unanimously approved this selection of nights. ADJOJJRNMENT, The Commission adjourned unanimously at 9:00 o~clock P,M., and met for a short time of discussion concerning the changes proposed by the Council for ·the zoning map and ordinru1ce now under consideration~
